UK gift cards in GBP: what works on a UK account
A short guide for players and shoppers with UK accounts: which cards to pick and how to avoid region errors.
If your PlayStation, Xbox, Apple or Nintendo account is set to the United Kingdom, you need cards issued in pounds sterling (GBP). Cards from the USA or Europe will not add funds to a UK account on these platforms.
Which UK cards are popular
- PlayStation Store cards for games, add-ons and PlayStation Plus.
- Xbox cards for the Microsoft Store and Game Pass.
- Nintendo eShop cards for Switch games and DLC.
- Apple gift cards for apps, iCloud+ and the App Store.
How to check your account is a UK account
- PlayStation: Settings, Users and Accounts, Account, and look at the country.
- Xbox: open your Microsoft account page in a browser and check the country or region.
- Apple: Settings, your name, Media and Purchases, View Account, Country/Region.
- Nintendo: open your Nintendo Account settings and check the country of residence.
Mixing currencies
Your account wallet stays in one currency. A UK account wallet is always in GBP. You cannot top it up with euros or dollars through gift cards, even if the value is the same.
Moving to or from the UK? Do not change your account country while you still have a balance. On most platforms the remaining balance stays tied to the old country.
