Gift card scams: 7 signs to watch for
How scammers use gift cards, and simple rules that keep your money safe.
Gift cards are easy to send and hard to cancel, so scammers love them. These are the signs to watch for.
- Someone asks you to pay a bill, a fine or a tax with gift cards. Real companies and governments never do this.
- A stranger offers codes far below the normal price in private messages.
- Someone asks you to read the code to them, or to send a photo of the back of the card.
- A "free V-Bucks", "free Robux" or "free UC" site asks for your login.
- A seller asks you to pay outside the official website.
- A message says your account will be closed unless you pay with gift cards.
- Someone you met online asks you to buy them gift cards.
Simple rules
- Only redeem codes on the official site of the brand.
- Never share a code before you redeem it.
- Never share your password or 6-digit login codes.
- Buy from stores you can contact, with a clear support page.
JR will never ask for your password or ask you to pay outside the site. If something looks wrong, contact support first.
